- Toe and heel protection
- Shock absorbing soles
- Padded collars and tongues

Although walking shoes are not comparable to walking boots in terms of performance, they do have some advantages.
The Pros of walking shoes
Walking shoes are very lightweight, meaning that they can be easily packed into a bag. Perhaps the biggest benefit of their lightweight construction is that they will allow you to stay agile while wearing them.
They typically demonstrate good breathability and flexibility so are a great choice for optimum comfort for walks on easy going terrain. This means where terrain permits you will be fresher using lighter footwear rather than standard walking boots and your feet can breathe more easily.
The cons of walking shoes
Walking shoes have little or no ankle support, so when carrying heavy loads they offer your ankle less protection and they are more vulnerable to being turned. Likewise the lack of ankle support means they are vulnerable to abrasions as you walk and especially where scree or rocks are likely to move.
In addition to this, waterproofing and insulation are limited in most walking shoes due to their collar height and lightweight composition. Remember even waterproof lined shoes are only waterproof as high as their collar, so ankle deep means wet feet!
