Olympic cycling stars 'are inspiring families'

23/03/2009 12:18
The high profile victories in cycling at last year's Olympics are inspiring people to get on their bikes, one expert has said.

Phillip Darnton of Cycling England told the Times that people like Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton are acting like the equivalent of David Beckham or Jamie Oliver to make people realise that cycling is fun.

"They are really inspiring kids, who go to after-school clubs and get on their bikes, as well as adults who now see cycling as fashionable," he pointed out.

The newspaper cites statistics from the organisation, which state that the number of people who cycle at least once a month has risen to 3.5 million, with cycle sales growing by five per cent every year.

Anyone intending to cycle this week may want to invest in some cycling trousers such as those from Dare 2b in order to protect themselves against the gale-force winds parts of the UK are currently experiencing.
