Use nature to nurture children, author urges

30/03/2009 16:40
Parents should encourage their children to get out and about as much as possible in order to benefit from what the great outdoors has to offer.

This is according to author Richard Louv, who told the Salt Lake Tribune that video games and a life indoors should not replace going hiking or on field trips, either with parents or with schools.

He called this lack of connection with the outside world 'nature deficit disorder' and said that children who do get outdoors could avoid problems such as depression later in life.

Mr Louv also pointed out that allowing children to take manage risks could lead to them developing better cognitive abilities, while an appreciation for nature may encourage them to live more environmentally-friendly lives.

A good pair of children's walking trousers from Regatta could be perfect for parents taking their children on days out in the countryside. They are durable and water repellent, as well as being a better option than jeans in terms of movement.
