Put on your walking shoes in search of the Scottish beaver

01/06/2009 15:59
People of Scotland looking for a place to get their walking shoes on this summer may wish to head to Knapdale Forest to see the Scottish beavers.

Re-introduced to the country in the spring of this year (2009), the European beavers can now be seen in their new home at the site in Mid Argyll.

Walkers are encouraged to use the car park at Loch Coille-bharr and explore the forest on foot.

According to Scottishbeavers.org.uk, the European beaver was native to Scotland until the 16th century, but the creatures were hunted to extinction in the country as they were sought after for their fur and for medicinal purposes.

The re-introduction of the mammal is part of a five-year trial to see if beavers can have a permanent future in Scotland again.

Minister for the environment Roseanna Cunningham said: "These charismatic creatures are not only likely to create interest in Scotland from further afield but crucially can play a key role in providing good habitat for a wide range of wetland species."

Visitscottishheartlands.com states the area of Mid Argyll is perfect for a family ramble, with lots of picnic benches and forest trails to choose from.

People thinking of taking a walk around the Knapdale Forest may wish to consider the Regatta Watershed ladies' trail shoe.
