New ski helmet laws introduced in Austria

21/01/2009 12:14
Officials in Austria have introduced a new law requiring children under the age of 14 to wear a ski helmet while out on the slopes.

However, with the risks associated with winter sports, experts have suggested that anyone going in such a holiday either at home or abroad follows the example and wears appropriate safety equipment.

Christian Kaulfersch, a doctor in an Accident and Emergency department, said the effects of an impact could be severe.

"Crashes at 30mph are like falling onto concrete from a second floor balcony," he commented, adding that the increased snowfall seen this season could make pistes faster, increasing the risk of accidents.

A recent survey commissioned by the Trois Vallees ski area and reported in the Times found that three in four British skiers and snowboarders already wear a helmet while out on the white stuff.

For anyone still in need of one, Head make a number of models, including one for children.
