'Clothing is key' for working in snow

04/03/2009 16:35
While the weather may be on its way to improving for the UK, anyone intending to head out to work in ski resorts will need to prepare for the cold in terms of warm clothes.

With this in mind, some advice from ski patrollers recently given to the Lethbridge Herald may be particularly pertinent.

Nikki Hollahan, who works at the Canadian Marble Mountain ski resort, said that even though the job may involve working up a sweat, it could be as cold as minus 30 degrees C outside, putting people at risk of frostbite if they do not layer up.

"I find it's a matter of having lots of changes of clothes because you don't want a moisture barrier around your skin," she commented, adding that she changes twice a day.

Ms Hollahan also recommended a scarf and balaclava, gloves, ski goggles and good footwear to anyone intending to take to the slopes for long periods.

While it may not be particularly glamorous, thermal underwear is also a must for cold conditions. Regatta and Dare2be both manufacture good examples of such products.
