Hiking 'has a positive impact on blood pressure'

09/06/2009 14:04
People who have concerns about their health may wish to consider putting on their walking boots and going for a hike.

Studies carried out by the Oregon Research Institute have found that hiking has a positive impact on high blood pressure.

Walking over uneven stones, rocky ground or even cobblestones has "profound benefits" for health, reported the Daily Mail.

According to the study, the activity of walking on cobbles is based in Chinese medicine and led to "significant reductions" in participants' blood pressure.

The report suggested that by stimulating acupressure points on the soles of the feet, blood pressure is lowered and regulated.

And because it is harder than walking on even ground, it will promote balance and burn more calories, it added.

Those looking to join a walking group in the Yorkshire area may want to head on an organised hike in the dales with the young persons' walking group Take A Hike.

For grip and performance for a hike on uneven ground, women may wish to consider the Hawkshead ladies' High Fell walking boots.
