Walk in the footsteps of history in Scotland

12/05/2009 15:03
A new website has put together a compilation of walks that are steeped in history to encourage outdoor-lovers to get outside and learn about the past.

ScotWays has listed walks on the website that follow routes that were used for smuggling whisky, roads that were followed to carry coffins to their burial sites and tracks used to drive cattle to market.

"Using Scotland's path networks offers physical, emotional and cultural benefits to people of all ages and abilities," said Ian Jardine, chief executive of Scottish Natural Heritage.

He went on to say that he hoped the website would encourage people to take an interest in the history around them while getting their walking boots on and enjoying the outdoors.

Not only does the website offer suggested routes but it also provides walkers with maps, historical descriptions and will inform people whether they can enjoy the paths on mobility scooters, bikes and horses as well as on foot.

According to the Pathways website, the South Harris Coffin Road in the western Isles still has large stone resting points where people carrying the coffins stopped on the way west as there was an insufficient depth of soil for burial on the east of the island.
