So, what is it about Gore-Tex that gets us outdoor enthusiasts so excited? Here we will outline the basics of Gore-Tex to communicate to you what advantages it has. The three most salient characteristics of Gore-Tex products are:

In addition, Gore-Tex products are also typically:

• Lightweight
• Good weight to insulation ratio

The science bit

The key aspect of a Gore-Tex product is the micro-porous membrane made from expanded Polytetrafluoroethelene (ePTFE).

This may not mean much to you; the basic idea is that the pores in a Gore-Tex membrane are many times smaller than water droplets, but much larger than the molecules of moisture released from the body. This means that the wet weather on the outside doesn’t get in, but perspiration is able to escape.

Types of Gore-Tex

There are a few styles of Gore-Tex products available each offering specialised technical performance suited to particular activities.

Gore-Tex Active Shell

The active shell is designed for high exertion activities. It is the least durable of the Gore-Tex range but offers unrivalled breathability and is very lightweight. Gore-Tex active shell products are ideal for trail running, mountain biking and other high intensity aerobic activities. Active Shell products are suitable to be worn next to the skin.

Gore-Tex Paclite Shell

The Paclite shell is designed for activities where weight and space are in short supply; ideal for travel, running, cycling, hiking, camping and endurance sports or expeditions. When bulk and weight need to be kept to a minimum the Paclite is what is needed. Offering the great weather protection you’d expect from Gore-Tex, and more durable than the Active Shell.

Gore-Tex Performance Shell

The Performance Shell is the most balanced of the Gore-Tex range, offering great all round performance. Performance Shell products are typically heavier than Active Shell and Paclite Shell products, but are much more durable. As the rugged all rounder, Performance Shell performs brilliantly up against bad weather in all sorts of outdoor activity. A Performance Shell jacket will offer great and continual all round protection for activities such as trekking and hiking.

Gore-Tex Pro Shell

This is the big one. Products with Gore-Tex pro shell are usually the most expensive of Gore-Tex products, but upon use you understand why. Gore-Tex Pro Shell makes no compromises, offering the most rugged, breathable and durable weather protection. The Pro Shell is designed to deal with persistent extreme weather conditions, such as those that may be encountered by mountaineers.
