Fleece; the old favourite with some new tricks
Many fleeces provide great moisture wicking. This means that they draw moisture away from the skin so it can then evaporate. For this reason, they are ideal for use as mid-layers.
If you need a lightweight fleece for spring or summer that is quick drying, a micro-fleece is the way to go. Micro-fleeces are ideal for walking, hiking and cycling.
If you anticipate using the fleece while skiing or snowboarding, with the possibility of some cold ski-lift journeys you may prefer a more substantial fleece or mid layer that provides superior thermal insulation. So the thickness of the fleece you will need depends on how much you feel the cold or warmth, and the nature of the activity that you are participating in.
Thick fleeces, although too substantial for aerobic sports, make for a perfect pullover during cold winter months. If you don’t feel the cold too much you may find that a micro-fleece will be appropriate for you over a huge range of activities.
You may consider choosing a fleece that is made from anti-pilling / anti-bobbling fabric. These generally have better longevity than standard fleeces, and hold up better through the washing process. Anti-pilling fleeces are typically a little more expensive, but are considered to be an all round better quality material.
Fleeces do not have good waterproofing properties. If rain is expected many people choose to wear a fleece for insulation under a hard-shell jacket which provides water-proofing. In better weather conditions during activities such as cycling, fleeces can be worn as a top layer over the top of a base-layer.
The soft-shell alternative
Soft-shell jackets perform the same type of functions as fleeces. They can be used as an insulating layer underneath a hard-shell that provides the appropriate waterproofing, or worn over a base-layer during active sports.
Like fleeces, soft-shells are not designed for use as a top layer in severe weather conditions. However, unlike fleeces soft-shells can be weather-proofed to an extent, providing additional protection from mild wind and rain.
At Trekwear we stock an extensive range of fleeces and soft-shells for men, women and children at great competitive prices so you can find everything you need.
